Buying a private aircraft starts with a travel requirement and an ownership plan. The listing price is only one part of the decision. Before choosing a model, define the mission, assemble the people who can evaluate the transaction and work out how the aircraft would be operated after delivery. This checklist helps a buyer or family-office planner organize those conversations; it does not replace technical, legal or tax advice.
Build a mission brief and acquisition team
Record the trips the aircraft should support: typical passenger groups, luggage, important destinations, timing constraints and how often requirements change. Separate the common mission from the occasional exceptional trip. Ask the acquisition team to explain which requirements drive the aircraft shortlist and which could be served another way.

Identify the responsible adviser for each area before deadlines begin to overlap. Ask who represents the buyer and how potential conflicts are handled.

Model the operating commitment as well as the purchase
Request a budget built around the proposed operation and your expected usage. Have the team separate acquisition and financing assumptions from recurring expenses and event-driven costs. Compare a normal year with scenarios such as lower utilization, a significant maintenance event or the need for substitute travel.
Use questions rather than a universal cost-per-hour rule. Which crew, management, hangar, insurance and maintenance arrangements are assumed? What is excluded? Which estimates require a current quotation? How would the plan change if the aircraft could not support an important trip? The decision-maker should see those assumptions before approving a purchase budget.
Track records, evaluation and closing decisions
The FAA provides aircraft registration and records resources for US aircraft. Those records are an input to the transaction review, not a replacement for the buyer's professional title, technical and contractual work. Ask the appropriate specialists to identify what they need, what they reviewed and which findings remain unresolved.
Maintain a decision list that distinguishes a document received from a question resolved. A folder full of files does not tell an approver whether an issue has been accepted, corrected or left open.
- Name the owner of the technical review and pre-purchase evaluation.
- Record who reviews title, liens, contracts and the proposed ownership structure.
- Track findings, requested remedies and the decision-maker for each material issue.
- Confirm the agreed delivery conditions and the team's closing checklist.
- Keep registration and post-closing responsibilities assigned through completion.
Plan the first trip before the transaction ends
Ask the operating or management team what must be ready before the aircraft enters the planned service. Keep that readiness plan separate from the financial closing milestone. The travel planner also needs the contact routes, request process and an alternative arrangement for trips that occur during the transition.
